What does it mean to make connections?
It can mean many things, such as socially connecting with people or physically connecting objects. But we will just focus on connecting ideas and concepts.
This basically means relating past knowledge or experiences to current knowledge or experiences.
How do you generally make connections?
Start by describing the key features or basic ideas of the source
Think about what is similar to the source or what it reminds you of
Start categorizing or labelling if necessary
Associate what is in the same category and why they are similar
Text Connections
Let's use text connections as an example.
What are the types of text connection?
Text to text: how does this connect to another book
Text to self: how can you relate this to yourself or your experiences
Text to world: how does this connect to something in the world currently or in the past
How do you make text connections?
You start by thinking of the basic idea of the text then thinking about what it reminds you of
If you can’t think of anything try researching or browsing the internet
Once you find a connection you think about how it connects to the original source
Think of deeper concepts rather than surface level aspects like what motivates a character or how the plot unfolds vs just having the same hair colour or living in the same country
Why don't we try it out right now?
Think of the most recent book you read or movie you watched
Think of the concepts, plots, themes
What does this piece of media remind you of?
Why does it remind you of that? How does it connect?
If you’ve answered those questions well then congratulations you just made a connection!
Making connections allows people to have a deeper understanding of what they learn and their past knowledge about the world around them. It also helps people explain their knowledge and understanding to others by adding a more familiar or understandable context.
